The Client

Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) is a key economic development agency within the South Australian Government, supporting industries with a total value in excess of $7 billion. It is committed to sustainable and responsible development as well as fostering of internationally competitive industries across the primary resources sector.

The Challenges

In May 2001, Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) launched a system that enabled the delivery of geospatial data across the internet. Two on-line 'modules' were established under the SARIG (South Australian Resources Information GeoServer) project:

  • Mineral Exploration Tenements Application (META): provides an electronic lodgement system for tenement application for the minerals exploration industry;
  • Mining Industries GeoServer (MIGS): provides on-line access to selected high quality geospatial information for the exploration and investment communities.

SRA was engaged to upgrade SARIG, to address:

  • Integration of the two modules;
  • Outstanding faults and enhancements;
  • Improved performance requirements;
  • Usability issues;
  • Improved look and feel requirements

The Solution

SRA has been responsible for significant rework of existing code to implement the design, enhance the functionality of the merged system and develop a better-structured, more easily maintainable set of code. This has involved close liaison with the graphic design team to implement the design concept.

The major functional areas addressed have been the on-line shopping cart and the GIS interface. SRA has redeveloped the shopping cart functionality that enables users to purchase catalogue items such as data CDs. The catalogue has been created as an XML document that is displayed to the users through a series of JavaServer Pages. Users can browse the catalogue on-line and add items to their shopping cart. They then have the choice of placing their order and paying for it by e-mail with a pay later option, fax with provision of credit card details, or on-line with provision of credit card details through the Bizgate electronic payment gateway.

The GIS functionality has been modified to comply with the new user interface design and extended to enable display of metadata with each map layer. ESRI's ArcIMS is used to display geographical information about South Australia such as:

  • Geological features;
  • Airborne geological surveys;
  • Mineral tenements;
  • Mineral occurrences;
  • Drill holes.

Users can make the required layer visible and active then all features for that layer are displayed. The user can highlight a feature or draw a rectangle to select multiple features. The detailed information about the selected features is then displayed in another frame. The user can also choose to purchase the data set being viewed by adding it to their shopping cart as described above.

Other functionality added includes the ability for a user to save a map and return to it later as they last viewed it. For example, a user may have zoomed in to a 1:250,000 ratio and had drill hole data displayed. He/she can save the map and return to it with the same view without having to redo the drill-hole search and zoom function.

The JavaScript developed for the SARIG upgrade incorporates the latest W3C Document Object Model (DOM) and enables features such as line drawing and dynamic addition of rows to HTML tables.

SRA has also recently completed a further upgrade of the SARIG web site to ArcIMS 4.0.
